A custom-designed light sculpture above the dining table

  • maatwerkverlichting

In this home, the dining table is central: it’s where the day begins and ends, where guests are welcomed, and where the family comes together. For this modernist home, we looked for a light object that does justice to that role—not just a lamp, but a sculptural element that tells as much about the architecture as it does about light. Together with the residents, we developed that idea into a fully custom-designed fixture, born from the drawing board and atelier simultaneously.

Form and light in one composition

light for a modernist home

During our first conversations with the residents, it quickly became clear that a standard fixture wouldn’t suffice here. Above the dining table, they wanted an eye-catcher that enhances the character of their modernist home: clear, graphic, with a strong presence of its own. Based on that request, we didn’t start with an existing model, but with a blank sheet, sketching in search of a shape that would reflect the architectural lines of the house.

The result is a composition of various slender profiles, each one designed and assembled in our own atelier. No two profiles are identical: each was given its own position, length, and angle, giving the whole a dynamic, almost graphic rhythm. A shape that stands its ground as an architectural object above the table even during the day, when the light is off.

“Custom lighting never starts with the light itself, but with how people experience their space.”

A result that moves with you

Via a wireless remote, the residents easily dim the lighting or call up one of the pre-programmed light scenes. In the morning, during a quick breakfast, the light is bright and functional. By evening, that same composition shifts effortlessly to a warm, intimate glow, simply by playing with intensity and color temperature.

What remains is a light object that has as much function as form: an architectural element that helps define the interior by day, and the warm core of the dining room by night.
